BRISTOL, Tenn. – My position on Danica Patrick hasn’t wavered since I first heard she was going to dip her toes in the waters of NASCAR: In order to do well, she has to dedicate herself to succeeding in stock car racing.

And now, after two abortive seasons, she is.

Ms. Patrick isn’t here, at least bodily. But she is a major topic of Bristol Motor Speedway conversation. It sort of reminds me of the atmosphere back in 2007, when Dale Earnhardt Jr. was pondering his future and considering his options.

The most common questions were asked of Junior, and the second most common questions were asked of others about Junior.

Now Patrick has announced, way out in Phoenix, Ariz., that she will compete full-time for Junior Motorsports in the Nationwide Series and part-time for Stewart Haas Racing in Sprint Cup.

Watch what you ask for. You might just get it. In the near future, Patrick is going to become the biggest thing since Dale Earnhardt Jr. Her polling numbers far exceed sliced bread, rural electricity and indoor plumbing.

When 2012 rolls around, Patrick’s position in NASCAR will likely be similar to her status in the IndyCar ranks after her trail-blazing victory in Japan back in 2008.

Patrick became bigger than sliced bread, et al., not to mention many drivers whose performances were better. Her Twin Ring Motegi victory was a bit of a fluke. She hasn’t been able to repeat it, though she did finish third in the 2009 Indianapolis 500. Over time, her star faded if not her star power. In this, her final IndyCar season, she has finished in the top five only once and ranks 12th in the point standings.

It should be noted that she has come a long way in stock cars. It should also be noted that she hasn’t come close to winning in the Nationwide Series. Her fourth-place finish early this year at Las Vegas Motor Speedway was, like her IndyCar victory, a bit of a fluke. Fourth place was a result of fuel strategy. Had she not been able to finish while others weren’t, her likely finish in that race would’ve likely been somewhere around 12th. In her seven races this year to date, she has finished between 10th and 24th in six of them.

Patrick will undoubtedly improve. What will probably happen is that she will be, in stock cars, similar to what she has been in IndyCars. She will race smart and stay out of trouble. She may win by doing so.

Caroline Wozniacki (born 11 July 1990) is a Danish professional tennis player. On 11 October 2010 she became the World No. 1 on the WTA Tour. After a single week as No. 2 in February 2011, she ensured enough points to become No. 1 again. She is the first Danish tennis player to hold the top ranking position and 20th overall.
Since her WTA debut in 2005, she has improved her year-end ranking each year until finishing on top in 2010. She has won 13 WTA singles titles as of February 2011, three in 2008, three in 2009, six in 2010 (the most since Justine Henin in 2007), and one in 2011. She was runner-up at the 2009 US Open and the 2010 WTA Tour Championships in Doha to Kim Clijsters. She won the 2006 Wimbledon Girls' Singles, but has yet to win a Women's Grand Slam title. She also holds two WTA titles in doubles.

Wozniacki won several junior tournaments in 2005, including the Orange Bowl tennis championship.[6] She made her debut on the WTA Tour at Cincinnati's Western & Southern Financial Group Women's Open on 19 July 2005, losing to the top-seeded and eventual champion Patty Schnyder in the first round. In the Nordea Nordic Light Open, her other WTA tournament of the year, she lost to Martina Suchá in the first round.
In 2006, she was the top seed at the Australian Open (junior girls' singles), but lost the final to eighth-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia. Wozniacki is the daughter of Polish immigrants, Piotr and Anna Wozniacki.Her mother played on the Polish women's national volleyball team, and her father played professional football. The couple moved to Denmark when Piotr signed for the Danish football club Boldklubben 1909. Wozniacki's older brother Patrik is a professional footballer for Hvidovre IF in Denmark.Her best friend is her fellow Danish tennis player Malou Ejdesgaard, her doubles partner in some WTA tournaments.They are trying to gain entry to the 2012 Summer Olympics in doubles.
When asked in 2008 by Teen Vogue magazine what sports beside tennis she liked to play, Wozniacki said "I like handball, soccer, swimming, playing the piano, and all kinds of different things."

Julia Göerges was born in Bad Oldesloe to Klaus and Inge Görges, both of whom work in insurance. She has one half-sister named Maike, who also works in insurance.She attended the Klaus-Groth-Schule in Bad Oldesloe from 1995 to 2005, and completed the mittlere Reife (Realschulabschluss). She began playing tennis around the age of 5 when her parents began taking her to the local club. Her tennis idol growing up was Martina Hingis, and she is also a fan of Roger Federer. Nadal then entered the 2010 Mutua Madrileña Madrid Open, where he had finished runner-up the previous year. Being one of the top eight seeds, he received a bye in the first round. In the second round, he defeated qualifier Oleksandr Dolgopolov Jr in straight sets. He then played the six-foot-nine-inch American John Isner. Nadal comfortably came through in straight sets, 7–5, 6–4. He defeated Gaël Monfils in the quarterfinals 6–1, 6–3 and his countryman Nicolás Almagro in the next round, who was playing in his first Masters 1000 semifinal, 4–6, 6–2, 6–2. The first set of his match against Almagro would be just the second set he lost on clay up to this point in 2010. Nadal then defeated longtime rival Roger Federer 6–4, 7–6(5), avenging his 2009 finals loss to Federer. The win gave him his 18th Masters title, breaking the all-time record. He became the first player to win all three clay-court Masters titles in a single year and the first player to win three consecutive Masters events. Nadal moved back to No. 2 the following day.
Entering the French Open, many were expecting another Nadal-Federer final. However, this became impossible when rival Robin Söderling defeated Federer 3–6, 6–3, 7–5, 6–4 in the quarterfinals.[82] The failure of Federer to reach the semifinals allowed Nadal to regain the world No. 1 ranking if he were to win the tournament. Nadal advanced to the final and defeated Soderling 6–4, 6–2, 6–4 to win the French Open. The win gave Nadal his seventh Grand Slam, tying him with John McEnroe, John Newcombe, and Mats Wilander on the all-time list, and allowed Nadal to reclaim the position of world No. 1, denying his biggest rival Roger Federer the all-time record for weeks at No. 1.[83][84] By this win, Nadal became the first man to win the three Masters series on clay and the French Open. This was dubbed by the media as the "Clay Slam". This victory at Roland Garros marked the second time (2008) that Nadal had won the French Open without dropping a single set (tying the record held by Björn Borg). In June, Nadal entered the AEGON Championships, which he had won in 2008, at the prestigious Queen's Club. He played singles and doubles at this grass court tournament as a warmup for Wimbledon. Nadal reached the semifinals in singles at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, where he was the defending champion; however, eventual champion Ivan Ljubičić defeated him in three sets.He and countryman López won the doubles title, though, as wildcard entrants against number one seeds Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjić.This boosted his doubles ranking 175 places[78] to world number 66, whereas he was 241st before Indian Wells.After Indian Wells, Nadal reached the semifinals of the Sony Ericsson Open, where he lost to eventual champion Andy Roddick in three sets.

Nadal reached the final of the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters in Monaco, after beating fellow Spaniard David Ferrer 6–3, 6–2 in the semifinals. He defeated Philipp Kohlschreiber, Victor Hănescu, and Stanlias Wawrinka, all in straight sets, to win his 57th straight match in April. In the semis, he faced a resilient Ernests Gulbis, who defeated Roger Federer earlier in the tournament and took Nadal to three sets for the first time this clay-court season. Nadal eventually prevailed with a 6–4, 3–6, 6–4 in 2 hours and 40minutes. He then defeated compatriot David Ferrer in the final 7–5, 6–2 for his fifth title at Rome to equal Andre Agassi's record of winning 17 ATP Masters titles.

Nadal began the year by participating in the Capitala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. He defeated compatriot David Ferrer 7–6(3), 6–3 to reach his second final in the exhibition tournament. In the final, Nadal defeated Robin Söderling 7–6(3), 7–5.[72]

Nadal participated in an Australian Open warm-up tournament, the Qatar ExxonMobil Open ATP 250 event in Doha, where he lost in the finals.[73] He defeated Simone Bolelli of Italy 6–3, 6–3 in the first round, and in the second round, Nadal defeated Potito Starace 6–2, 6–2. Nadal's progress continued in the quarterfinals when he was up 6–1, 2–0 against Steve Darcis of Belgium, who eventually retired from the match. He defeated fifth seed Viktor Troicki 6–1, 6–3, winning 11 straight games in the semifinals. Nadal lost to Nikolay Davydenko 6–0, 6–7(8), 4–6 in the finals, despite dominating in the opening set and holding two match points in the second set.Davydenko also defeated Roger Federer in the semifinals before advancing to the finals.

In the first round of the Australian Open, Nadal defeated Peter Luczak of Australia 7–6(0), 6–1, 6–4. In the second round, he beat Lukáš Lacko 6–2, 6–2, 6–2.
